Art Deco Panel-Cut Salts & Toothpick Holder w/ Black Bases
« on: November 27, 2011, 11:11:58 AM »
Picked these up recently, but can't track down a maker. They're clear glass with applied bases in black hyalith glass. The sides are crisply panel-cut. Fair amount of wear to the bases.

I know Orrefors produced similar wares in the 1930s, but as far as I can tell their cuts tended to be concave rather than flat. So... Czech, perhaps?

Any help gratefully received.

Nick, I'm sure you've already done so, but have you had a browse through this site
to see if there is anything similar?
There is another site called Valerio Deco or ValerioArtDeco I think?? they have some beautiful glass as well.
I always look at pieces like that and think they are French - I have no idea why and I'm probably totally wrong.  Something about Josephine Baker's house (the bathrooms in particular) must have stuck with me  ;D

Black feet were very popular during the thirties, and at least Leerdam, Maastricht and one or two of the Belgian makers produced similar - like Orrefors.  But also Germany almost certainly and France most probably.

Thanks for the input - I'll have another rummage around with the suggestions, but I figured when I bought them that I'd likely have to be satisfied with 'stylish but anonymous'.

Much the same as the sides - cut and polished flat.

No idea about the pieces but, as always, impressed with your photography :)

Thanks.  :)

Although I'm waiting for a shipment of nylon so I can build a big diffuser to get rid of that sharp shadow being cast under the items. Then I'll be really happy with my photos.

Nic I know this is not the same but when I spotted it, it reminded me of your salts.  Perhaps another name to add to your 'looking' list?
