Purple footed bowl (vase-?) with lid - information??
« on: November 28, 2011, 07:22:20 AM »
I didn't know what to call this piece; footed bowl, footed vase, lidded compote??  It's 10" (25.4cm) tall and 5.5" (14cm) wide.  Very nice shade of light purple (lilac).  The interior is smooth so the glass behind the ovals on the outside of the bowl is not concave; the ovals are solid.  There are 3 mold lines running the length of the base; the lid doesn't have mold lines.  It has 2 bubbles in the glass (not broken through to the exterior) and what I think is called a "straw mark".  Would they be considered indications of a lesser quality glass?  It belonged to my mother.  I know she didn't buy it but she had an aunt who went to flea markets and gave her things.  It showed up on her mantel sometimes in the early 1990's.    It's probably US glass but I was wondering if it could be European.  Does anyone have any information or opinions?

I would say possibly US and perhaps have a look at Heisey or Tiffin. The flaws are indicative of age rather than lack of quality

Might search L.E. Smith or Viking as they both made these types of covered candy jars or post it to the U.S. board http://chataboutdg.com

I forgot about Viking.  As soon as you mentioned it, I knew that was correct.  It has a Viking look.  I scanned Ebay and found a number of these bowls for sale.  Mostly in loud red/orange.  No light purple.  They were also made in different sizes.  The 10" seems to have been the largest.  Prices were all over the place but very inexpensive.  All of the sellers who mentioned a date said the glass was part of Vikings Epic collection made in the 1960's.  A little older than I thought.  This listing needs to be moved to USA.
