Murano style footed vase ("Veronese" shape) with iridescence
« on: January 20, 2012, 03:23:50 PM »
Can somebody shed a light on maker/age of this vase please? :)

28 cm high, pastel blue/yellow/pink, with a soft golden iridescence. Indented foot, no pontil mark, smooth rim.
Shape is vaguely similar to the Venini "Veronese" vases, technically very different though:

I think that the colours (at least the pink and the yellow, not so sure about the blue) might be painted on. But I cannot tell with certainty.
The exterior is irregularly ribbed, I guess due to the way it was made (the whole thing looks as if it was made on a potter's wheel if you know what I mean).

I have absolutely no idea where it might come from, neither if it is totally new or quite old...
So any help very much appreciated!

Thanks
Michael

Dear G...I had an exact piece in my watch list on ebay a few months ago and for the life of me I cannot remember who it was attributed to. Stunning piece rocco!

Kane, thank you so much for your comment!

Any ideas at least from which area the piece might come from? -- Is Murano an option?
And I am really curious about the technical aspect; how was this vase made? Does the horizontal ribbing indicate anything?

Just found this vase on German ebay, which has some similarities to my piece (though the seller claims it to be Incalmo the colours seem to be painted on IMHO).
Not that this helps much in attribution...

I think your vase has a lovely almost classic shape, it would not surprise me if it turned out to be from Murano. I have to qualify that by saying I know next to nothing about glass from Murano....

As to the ebay vase it does look as though there are joins but again, refer to my comment above!

I wonder if they are both from a contemporary maker?

I can not see the ribbing you mention, can you take another photo to highlight it? Sometimes shading the item from direct light can help pick out such features.

I'm not sure this is helpful at all, but Walther Driburg used 'sprayed on' colours, with a slight iridescence sometimes, and in those shades.  I've had a quick search through the board and the colours on yours are similar to those they used but the shape of the piece is nothing like.  I just thought though, that if they used that technique and you think it is painted on, then perhaps another maker was using the same technique.
If you search Walther Driburg you should come up with some threads on the painted on technique.

Thank you all very much for your thoughts!

@John: I agree that the ebay vase seems to have joints (I cannot tell for sure) -- but if you look at the pic of the base the iridescent pink seems to start just in the middle of the clear glass with no joint -- that's why I supposed the colour could be sprayed on.
The colours scheme does look remarkably similar, don't you think?

I tried to take a pic to show the horizontal "ribbing" in my vase (which IMO is not part of the design but due to technical necesseties); didn't work very well -- best seen in the distortions of the background :)

@m: that is an interesting idea with Walther; I searched the board and the web, the only other lustred piece I could find was this one: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,26890.0.html
And your interesting thread: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,40617.0.html
Still all Walther items I have seen were pressed glass (which my vase is clearly not).
But maybe Walther was the refiner of blanks from other makers? :ho:

Rocco, I wasn't thinking it was Walther but perhaps another maker was using that technique if you think it is a 'sprayed-on or 'painted on' colour?

For sprayed on colour lustre you could look at Romania. Turkey is nother country where this is a favourite technique, though mostly used on tableware. The shape of the vase has been used by i.a. IVV.

Ivo, thanks a lot for looking into this!
But what the heck does i.a. IVV. mean?

Edit: found it ;D
