Victorian roundel portrait of Richard Wagner 1888
« on: January 28, 2012, 03:25:22 PM »
Can anyone throw light on my Victorian glass roundel portrait of Richard Wagner by SCD (letters on top of each other) in 1888, please ? It is painted on BOTH sides, matt medium, in black, brown & yellow. How do I clean it & should I lead mount protect it with thin glass on both sides ? Thanks

Hi and welcome to the board. You seem to have slid down the page rapidly, so I'm hoping someone may be able to help with your query.  Could you post pics of your roundel whilst we're waiting? It'd be interesting to see, as I don't think we've had anything like this on the board before.
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

Photos really are needed, reply to this thread and ask if you need help posting them here.

You may be able to find some information by using the term crystoleum when searching. Is your painting on curved or flat glass? I can not remember seeing a crystoleum painted on both sides so perhaps yours would have a different name.

Hello John, Many thanks for your interest. I have since found an accredited stained glass restorer in Bolton, 'Design lights' who have taken pity on me & very kindly offered to relead my roundel for the princely sum of £5.00 ( !!! ) as to restore the original leading would not have made it safe to hang, they'll 'black up' the lead so that it doesn't look so modern. I think there is no way I could trace the roundel's history & artist SCD (signature letters on top of each other) as folks tell me there were no registers of victorian glass painters. As I'm sure you know, Wagner died in 1883, so the signed date of 1888 seems to me to be related to this event, possible a commission by a lover of Wagner's music, like me ! I'm afraid I haven't got a digital camera, tho' being an 81yr old medical photographer in my youth, so can't send you a photo. Thanks again, June

That sounds like a bargain June. It also sounds like your roundel is painted much as stained glass often is, in which case crystoleum is a big old red herring...

If you have a niece or nephew that could take a picture with a digital camera or phone we would still like to see it. You could email the photo to myself or Anne (envelope icon below our names on the left of the screen) if you have any difficulty adding the photo to this thread.

Hello John ! I've just come across a page where I can reply to you ! Halleluja !! You've probably got my email by now any, I'm going to collect my roundel from the restorer tomorrow & then I'll try & send you a photo with the help of my photographic lightbox & my neighbour, tho' I doubt if it will be via the GM website, may I send it to your private email address. Do you know anything about Mats Jonasson, Swedish glass engraver/cut glass artist ? Regards. June (123)
