Turquoise cased glass vases, matt white inside - any ideas?
« on: January 29, 2012, 01:37:11 PM »
Hello

I'm new to glass collecting and recently picked up a mix lot at an auction - this included some Scandinavian glass candle holders that I have been able to identify.  I'm wondering if this pairs of vases could be Scandinavian as well.  There are no labels unfortunately and no markings to either base.  There is a trace of a mark (pontil) within the top part of the base of the stem on one of them but nothing on the other.  There are one or two tiny air bubbles in the outer surface glass, and the inside glass seems to be more of a matt finish.  Pictures haven't captured the true turquoise colour very well. My other thought was Italian.  Probably wrong on both counts so I won't be surprised if someone says M&S or Ikea!!

Many thanks
Denise

Hi there, and Welcome to the Board  :rah: :rah:

Your pics are a little small and would be nice to be bigger.  So this old bat here can't see that much.....my guess either Empoli or Asian, but I can not see that much detail with the small pics.  Someone else will be able to help and will know more.

Again, a big Welcome to the Board!!

Hi Rose

Thanks so much for your quick reply. I've tried to take a couple more photos (slightly different angles) which might show some more detail, and are more suitable for viewing on this page (hopefully).  For information the vases are just under 10 inches in height.

Loving the Board, and looking forward to adding some more posts.

Many thanks
Denise

Re: Turquoise vases, white inside - possibly Empoli - can anyone help?

Hi

Thanks Rose for suggestion of Empoli (or made in Asia ...).  I've changed the title to reflect this - grateful for any further opinions on Empoli or alternatively confirmation that they're just a mass produced item (I like them anyway - much nicer / stronger colour than in the photos).

Many thanks
Denise

The diffence between Empoli and Chinese is that the Chinese use a very light milk glass - almost like milk diluted with water - while the lattimo used in Empli is quite strong and even. It is no always easy to pick up from a photograph. Anyways, it looks as if yours are of the Chinese persuation.
