Topic: Graduated Uranium Glass Bottle Vase w/ Mystery Signature

Had this a while, and cannot track down the signature.

The vase is 31cm tall and graduates from bright uranium yellow to a deep apple-green. Very well made and quite weighty. Base ground/polished, with an indented pontil mark.

Signature reads 'Murano...' ...something-or-other. Looks a little like the Cenedese signature... if the person signing it fell asleep part halfway through.

Still, it would be better than one of my thoughts - that someone has halfheartedly tried to fake a Venini signature.

With a long loop at the beginning of the ´C´?

I did consider a wonky Cenedese signature, but I've never seen any Cenedese with 'Murano' also engraved.

I would say owner with dremel. Although the signature looks different work to the Murano. Maybe a genuine signature and someone added Murano?

I considered this too, given that at first glance it's a Cenedese-esque sig but on reading it you could fit 'Venini' into the letters. But I thought that, on reflection, the hand that signed the piece probably looked a little too assured to be a casual faker.

That, and the brain's a funny old place when confronted with apparently random data - finding patterns and messages in it that simply don't exist.

But... pretty much every fake sig I've ever seen has been a grotesque childish scrawl. So if it were by a professional faker, experienced with engraving glass, you would've thought they'd have at least made it legibly like an existing signature.

Hi Nic - I don't think it is like other Cenendese signatures I have seen. They have all been fairly neat although as they were normally done by someone other than the maker. Here is a thread I started but the signature was from ebay and it is gone but it is nothing like yours. http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,29948.0.html

Oh, I didn't mean it was a carbon copy of a Cenedese sig (although I own / have owned about 20 pieces of signed Cenedese - and are some are signed a little more neatly than others  ), but rather that it shared some features if you glanced quickly at it, like the loop on the first letter that may (or may not) be a 'C'.
