Topic: Some help please? Prunted decanter and roemers

Hi there,

I wonder if you could help me. Let me start of by saying that, while I really like antiques, I don't pretend to know anything about them. So please excuse my all round ignorance.

I bought this decanter with two matching glasses from a person a few years ago. He told me it was a victorian absinth decanter, although I'm not sure about the absinth part myself. The shape says sherry to me?

I've tried to research as best I can and from what I can gather the style is Roemer. While the base colour is the same as the others I've seen, I've yet to come across one with the same blue details as mine. Plus all of the Roemer glasses I've come across seem to be a lot larger than the ones I have (3.5 inches). The decanter itself is approx 10 inches.

Any information you can give me would be much appreciated. I'm not expecting it to be worth a fortune, but I'd like to know. I'm quite attached to the old thing.

That is a lovely decanter and quite likely to be victorian - I would just not use that for foreign glass. Victoria never ruled in France or Germany where your decanter most likely originates - but that is a matter of personal preference.
It is not for Absinth though. Absinth requies a large glass, more like a footed tumbler. The Rummer which you correctly identified is for white wine.
You might want to check Georges Sand for other items in this colour combo. That is a line from Portieux - but there are other glassworks where similar combinations were used.
Timewise I'd think anytime between 1880 and 1920 - but again, this is speculative.

thanks very much for your replies. Is it really for white wine? I knew generally the style was, but I thought my version was far too small. It will hold a shots worth of alcohol if not less! Thanks again for the info, it's given me a lot to research

Ok missed the size as imperial does not travel well.

The small ones are for schnapps - marc - obstwasser - kirsch, whichever.

it is a set of Liquor roemers and a decanter pattern number 494 from the glassworks of Theresienthal.

It is to be found in their catalogues vom 1890 to 1907.
