cut biscuit barrel for id
« on: February 21, 2012, 10:07:33 AM »
couldn't leave this behind despite some minor damage, but puzzled by what appears to be a factory code scratched on underside of base - as shown in the picture, and which looks like the no. 14/557  -  almost missed seeing this, it's really very small.     Am assuming 1930's - 1940's somewhere, although could be wrong, and the only thing in any way comparable are a couple of pix of similar oval shaped biscuit barrels in 'Art Deco to Modernism'  - although those are decorated with progressive/modernist cutting, unlike the conventional design on this one.        Heavy lead crystal, and mitres are very deep, and cutting is beautiful.    I thought possibly Walsh, but the Walsh pattern Nos. are nothing like this.     Seems this shaped biscuit barrel uncommon  -  I'm struggling to find other examples, so all thoughts very welcome and thanks for looking. :)

Hi Paul:

I do not know much about your item -- but I will see IF I can find anything more on somewhere.  Is a Biscuit Barrel like a Cookie Jar, I am just wondering?  What is the Size of it?  Maybe Glass Cookie Jar will bring something up -- not sure -- but worth a shot once I know the Size of it.

Nice Item, and Good for you for spotting those little numbers there.  Good Eyes!! :smg:  ( a great pic of it too )

thanks Rose  -  apologies for omitting the height - it's about 5" to the lid, and then another 3/4" for the handle.     I probably wouldn't have known its use with any certainty without seeing the pictures of others I mentioned - I did mistakenly first think it was something from a woman's dressing table kit.    I also forgot to say that I don't think it's from continental Europe, in view of the style of the 'seven'  -  so most likely British, but there's an outside chance I suppose that it might have originated from your side.    It's an absolute corker for catching the light and sparkling, so I'll keep it despite the nibbles.   I have several C19 biscuit barrels, although they are simply round in shape as you might imagine more.        Perhaps this is for oval biscuits ;) - although don't think you'd get many of whatever shape in there, but then again it was likely to have been a high table piece - a bit like cut glass jam pots and proper butter dishes.        I did briefly think the nos. might have indicated an edition quantity, but probably unlikely, and I'm sure it's a factory pattern No. from some producer.

Thanks Paul S:

Will *see* if I can find anything.  So it could still be something for a ladies dresser (maybe??)  or something other than cookies (biscuits).  I guess they did not have *cubed sugar* so that is out of the question      LOL

Yes, do keep it (even with the Nibbles) -- It is what a person likes is all that matters!

So a keeper, and it has a new home with You.  Super !! :smg:  Still See IF I can find anything.....?
