Dating Mdina Bowl
« on: February 22, 2012, 01:08:39 PM »
Hi All,

Hoping to try and get a rough production date for this small Mdina bowl. Measures 4.5 inches tall and approx 4 inches in diameter, also fairly thick walled. Large amount of wear to base.

I think I recall seeing a similar one previously signed by Michael Harris, so wondered if this would date to pre 1972 or if these continued to be produced after that date...?

I've also included a picture next to a Chinese bowl to get a better idea of size.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Greg

I'm pretty sure it will be from the Michael Harris period, Greg. I think these tend to be described as bell-jars, and they're normally only seen in early colour designs - such as bubbly yellow insides cased in blue, (which was produced post-Harris, but not for too long) or Rosenthal.
It's almost like my tall Chinese bowl but without the characters!
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Thanks for the info Sue, much appreciated.

Seems to sit quite happily next to the Chinese bowl.

I would think 72 or earlier also. Although they did use bubbly yellow in blue after 72 the blue tends to be brighter and more uniform - far fewer streaks of ochre like in your very nice bell vase.

These three Mdina bell vases live on top of a cupboard at the moment (the Chinese bowls are bell vases with extra bling to my eye), they share the space up there with some Isle of Wight bells too.

I'm telling folk that you're far better than I am at this stuff, John.  :smg: :smg: :smg:

It's true - your observation about the amber streak(s) is/are perfectly correct. I did take this into account when I was estimating the date for this bell jar, but forgot to bring it into conscious awareness..... :pb:
so I didn't mention it.  :pb: :pb: :pb:

Thanks both for the extra info.

That's a nice grouping of bell vases John, you don't see many Rosenthal ones around or crizzled ones to mention it, if any!

Would my example be best described as a bell-jar or bell vase or is that just semantics. Just wondered if the slightly smaller versions are described as bell-jars and the slightly larger ones bell vases..?

Thanks
Greg
