age of this blue vase? 19th century?
« on: February 22, 2012, 04:36:13 PM »
I bought this vase recently. It has a snapped off pontil mark, deep kickup, is charmingly wonky and uneven and has a streak of the blue colour in the glass visible on the base. Any idea of vintage? 19th century?
thanks
Julie

Im no expert but when i try and date i firstly look at wear on the base as if youve been about a hundred plus years or in the case of kick-up bases longer maybe then you would show wear to the extremities of the foot maybe not all around but certainly in spots where it touches the surface, Secondly i look for imperfections in the glass small seeds of dirt an so on which were in the batch of molten glass this usually finds its way into older victorian and georgian glass and air bubbles here and there!! If i can say yes to these two points i start to look into the shape itself yours does appear to have a shape of an older piece of glass but the rim seems a little thick and the base from the photo's looks fairly smooth with little wear? So im airing on the side of maybe without seeing and feeling the weight etc hard to be sure there are lots of old looking glass bits about but if i cant find wear etc i usually steer clear unless its decorative in its own right people are making glass that looks old all over the place.

Interesting ideas, thank you. I've had another look at the base. Firstly, because of the shape it has a very small surface area in contact with whatever it's sitting on, secondly, it doesn't sit flat so there are areas not in contact at all. So the ring of wear on the base is quite narrow. Hard to say if it's worn enough. I'll have a better look later.

There are air bubbles in the glass - an amount I would expect in 19th century glass.

The rim is thicker. I had another look at it. It's folded over and very uneven.

Your last point is my main concern. I've seen reproductions that I can't tell from an authentic Victorian vase.
