Murano Sommerso Goose or Duck Figure
« on: February 23, 2012, 03:22:40 PM »
I've got a whole menagerie of Murano glass animals I need help with, but I'll post them one-by-one over time so as not to overwhelm the board.  I've picked them up over the last few years, though I know little about Murano glass.

This is a recent purchase, bought at an auction where there was (oddly) little interest in it.  It's 9.25" tall and about 4" long.  Sommerso techniques; the outer layer is a transparent green (in American terms, close to a "Coke bottle green"), the inner a rich blue color.  The green glass does glow slightly but intensely under UV light.  Bottom is polished flat (I have a pic if anyone wants to see it).

I'm looking for a maker -I did go a board member's (excellent) Murano Zoo site, without luck- and also suggestions on whether it's a duck or a goose.

I was completely daunted by the world of Murano glass for years -I came into glass collecting through the easy and cut-and-dried world of American mold-pressed glass- but I finally feel confident I'm ready to be educated in the mysteries of Venetian glass.

Has to be a goose - has that mean look on its face (I was always chased by a flock of geese on my way to school )

It is lovely - my sort of bird, but sorry I cannot help with a maker

Yes,  I thought that too Helga.....Robert, have you looked at Ronneby glass?  I bought my bird because I think it might be Ronneby....I am hoping to post it here on the GMB soon,  but was waiting until I can get a better picture.

beaubow, could you show us a shot that is completely from the side so we can see the tail and the way the wings come from the body. A shot without black light would be best so we can see the colors. I do not think it is Marcolin because of the bill. It looks like a duck-swan hybrid to me. I am leaning more toward swan with the bird, but I never can tell, really. Glass artists took a lot of liberties with the anatomy of their animals.

Shot from the back.

There's no blacklight on any of these shots; the green part of the body just glows like that.  i should have probably taken them against a different backdrop.  That green color works for just about everything but green-colored glass.

I should also point out that the eyes are almond-shaped, which is a detail I've never seen on a glass bird before; it adds a level of realism you don't usually see.

Thank you for the extra picture and the explanation. I looked through my files and couldn't find any animals with similar form or color, so I'm clueless about your bird. Maybe someone will happen upon something similar soon.
