I doubt whether the 1979 Epsom Derby, held, I understand, on 6th June, was flag started, so this engraving might have been inspired by the first Derby in 1780.
As you will see from the final image, the piece is signed under the starter's flag "A. O. 35/200". I wondered whether the "O" might be a clue, as there a lot of Os in the Irish phone book. Certainly Waterford made crystal ice buckets in modern times.
Any ideas on maker / engraver?
