Glass bowl with applied spiral of blue beads
« on: March 04, 2012, 09:05:48 AM »
A glass bowl with an applied spiral of blue glass beads, not sure if they are enameled or not.

Not sure where to start with this so any help would be much appreciated. Difficult to age as bowl sits on blue beads and no wear to base. Polished pontil to base.

Diameter 6.5" / 17.5cm , height 4.75"/ 12cm, weight 820gm.

Thanks Roy

That looks very special - I am envious    It reminds me of a decanter I have with the dots on.  However yours has a polished pontil mark and mine is snapped off, and your 'beads' look to be bigger and more neatly done than mine.
There is something similar in Gulliver's Victorian Decorative Glass page 175 with turquoise blue blobs and it talks about it '...in a manner similar to that patented in 1905 by H.Wilkinson of Amblecote near Stourbridge, West Midlands'.  There is no id though.
I will find a link to my decanter and cross link them for reference.

Roy, there is also the vase/bowl in CH British Glass 1800-1914 page 278.  It's a black and white shot but is described also as having turquoise 'beads' on it.  To me, it looks as though yours, and the one in Gullivers and this one may be the same maker?  Unfortunately it doesn't state who that may be except to refer to H Wilkinson and his patent of 1905.
If you find out any more please do update as I would love to know more about my decanter.
Thanks
m

Just browsing through a DK Antiques Guide 2007 and on page 233 there is a clear glass vase 10" high with the same turquoise beads - it states it is a Libbey glass vase. c 1930.  The blurb says 'A.Douglas Nash had previously worked for Tiffany amd ran his own business before he went into partnership with Libbey in 1930'.
I would say the decor of the turquoise beads is remarkably similar to your vase.
If nothing else it shows this decoration was popular in the 30's.

I just found a very similar bowl to mine which was for auction at Fieldings last year Saturday 16th June 2012 lot 456 http://fieldingsauctioneers.co.uk/auctions/print/9/GL which was described as early 20th century Stourbridge vase by H Wilkinson applied turquoise beads.

Hi Roy

thanks for the link:)
I think the beads look very dissimilar to mine now being able to see more clearly - but perhaps the technique is still the same.
However, in Gullivar's Victorian Decorative Glass, that vase (I believe it is the same one, or is an identical one) is described as '...in a manner similar to that patented in 1905 by H Wilkinson of Amblecote.
So unless Fielding's have found out something in the meantime.... it may have been a stretch in terms of id :)
