Topic: Pulegoso? Murano?

Recently bought this vase off e-bay for a good price but couldn't be sure if it was Murano or not.

When I looked at the photos I was unable to tell if it was scavo or pulegoso. The day it arrived and I unpacked it I could see it was like pulegoso but remain in the dark as to it's origin.

Hoping someone here may have some info on this piece.

I quite like the way the folds have been manipulated into ridges and where they meet the glass becomes clear.

It's 7.5 in. / 18.5 cm  H by 5.5 / 14 cm W.

Interesting piece. What is the treatment on the surface where it's not clear?  Is it sandblasted, or sanded, or perhaps a scavo-like surface application?

It's not classic Murano pulegoso, where the bubbles are almost foamy. The classic pulegoso was created by adding kerosene to the glass, whereas this looks more the result of adding a sodium compound, lots of bubbles, but not frothy.

It looks quite modern to me, but I can't say I've seen it before.

The surface is smooth. The distortion is caused by the tiny bubbles within the glass.
Looking at it on my window sill right now, I would swear that it was scavo. It's not until you actually pick it up that you see the bubbles.

I guess what I don't understand is why the the rim of the vase looks different, even where there are bubbles.

Good point.
About one third of an inch / .5 cms of the rim is clear of any bubbles, all the way around.

The pontil mark would I think, exclude it being Murano.  Hopefully someone will be able to confirm this.  Most vases I've seen in Murano have flat polished bases.  A nice piece of glass though!

Not entirely.  I have seen this ground out pontil mark on Murano pieces before, not often, admittedly.

Is the inside of the vase the same finish as the outside?

Yes it is David.
Very smooth inside and out. When you run your fingers along the surface, you don't feel the bubbles at all.
