Malta glass whale?
« on: March 23, 2012, 09:25:55 AM »
When I bought this I thought it was Chinese. Now I read about the Malta/China connection in glass production.

This is also a tenuous connection, but I've seen those little holes on the bases of different glass including Mdina.

I think that once over the grinding wheel base is a dead giveaway for Chinese. MDG was a very small company operating for a very limited time.

The interesting thing is about MDG is that the labels don't say 'Made in Malta' and some of the designs are very similar to designs from China.

I'm thankful for your

Some of the labels don't say Made in Malta, yours are the first I have seen like that.

Not mine John, but others seen here. But thanks for clarifying that. Some do, some don't.  It's not unique for production to be supplemented with bought in products. Hajdamach says that this was done with lamp worked glass in Britain in the post war period.

They don't say "Made in Malta", John.
They say "Malta Decorative Glass" and "Hand made" or, if it's the label on the moulded fish thing Baked-beans found, it simply reads; "Malta Decorative Glass".

I'm afraid this whale is completely the wrong shape and design for MDG.

Thanks Sue. I've just noticed that the fins are completely different.

So it's most likely Chinese and not sold though MDG.

And the head is a completely different shape, the eyes are different, the pose is different, I think it's a completely different species.

Whoops, sorry, that was me getting all confused (more than once).

I agree this whale does not seem to share very much with the MDG branch of the cetaceans.
