Biomorphic tricorn bowl polished and beveled base. Czech?
« on: March 24, 2012, 11:43:27 AM »
I'm sure I read somewhere (possibly here?) that a beveled edge to the polished base s an indication of Czech origin.

The colour in the this piece also suggests Czech to me - but as those who read my postings will be aware - I'm very often wrong!

I've also posted a similar item, a possible cousin.

Both don't look Czech to me...
Sorry, I can't help much further in ID.

You are right that most Czech glass is finished with a flat polished base with beveled edge -- but that applies to many makers in other countries as well. So I would go the other way round: if the base is not polished and beveled Czech is unlikely; if it is, Czech is a possibility amongst others :)

Michael

Thanks Michael,
that's good way of putting it. At least I was right to indicate that I am often wrong!
Steve.

I really don't know, but perhaps Czech could be a possibility.  There is a similar design (and colourway) in the 1986/9 CGR from Chribska glassworks.

Thanks Anik,
I always thought they looked to light weight to be Chribska but now you have shown this catalogue page I see similarities, but different designs. I couldn't see a date on those pieces, I saw that the journal was dated 1986, but was looking at glass from 1946 - right?

It could also be Scandinavian or French, to name a few, or even Murano. These shapes were popular in the 50s-60s, and widely copied.

Thanks Astrid,
yes, that's why I posted them to see if anyone knew specific details to either the colour or finishing of the base.
I had thought of Scandinavian but not French.
In the case of glass like this it's mostly about the look anyhow. I'm just awaiting Anik's reply as to the dates in the CGR. Do the designs go back to 1946?

Can't really pin it down to a time period. I think the Murano designs inspiring this style must have been early to mid 50s at the latest to influence the designs for Scandinavian, Czech, French, Belgian etc factories in the late 50s to 60s/70s.

If I recall correctly, the Czech and Flygsfors started to look like that in the late fifties, and I have never found a good source to date the French and/or Belgian pieces, but I know that Bayel (France) and Boussu (Belgium) did have that sort of style in their production (never seen a catalogue of these factories, sadly).

I'll dog around online to see if I can find anything similar for Bayel and Boussu. Thanks for the tip.

I don't think this is Flygsfors. The colours aren't right. Also look a little light weight.

Thanks.
