Glass fish filled with 'Sands of W.....'
« on: May 10, 2012, 07:58:45 PM »
Picked up this in an interesting collection I bought today from a woman whose sister owned a glass and china shop. Most of the items are old stock were stored in her loft.

About 3" from mouth to tail
different coloured glass encased in clear glass
partially removed sticker gives clues to origin
Can you fill the blanks in for me?

Thanks Christine. I knew it must be Wight or Wales. Now I can narrow down the search for the marker: Blac.... ?

Sands of Wirral?  ;D

Isn't this kind of thing mass produced with a different label added for each place?

Isle of Wight (Alum Bay) do make these holiday souvenirs but this is not one of theirs. The missing part of the label reads... by Beaches Ltd, a firm in Cornwall that produces glass and pottery holiday souvenirs.

Alum Bay may well sell them but I do they actually make them?

I suspect they are lampwork; could be made by anybody.
And does Beaches Ltd make them or just fill them?

sands of wight  I think, they are sold on the Ise of wight (not isle of wight studio glass as some are listed on ebay).
we saw lots on a little gift shop near alum bay (again not actually sold at alum bay the glass studio). They also had little lighthouses and 'the needles' which is a rock formation at the point of Alum Bay
