Large steel blue jug, interesting shape
« on: May 19, 2012, 10:26:27 AM »
I know jugs are hard to ID but does anyone know who made this large specimen please. Its maximum height is 28.5 cm. It has a polished pontil mark and a textured thumb rest

My usual assumption for these is Polish - maker unknown by me.  A photo of the base and the textured area may help get further.

There's something about it that reminds me a little of some early Caithness pieces.... but would there be "unknown variants"?
I don't think Poland. It's not any sort of generic jug - it's quite distinctive.

The base has a standard polished pontil mark and a fair amount of wear; a picture will add nothing. The top of the handle has been flattened using something that wasn't smooth.

I don't think it Polish; it is everso slightly more "handmade" and more "designer" than my two known Krosno pieces. The Poles are not the only people to make large jugs.

Sue, I noted the similarity with the early Caithness too

I got out the big ladder and climbed up to the ceiling - my Caithness jug-of-the-ilk-we-are-discussing has a "flat top" shape to the handle - but there is no impression on it - it's rounded. I haven't taken a pic because it will take hours to clean it up...... (kitchen cupboard-top grease etc. :-[ )

It barks out 'Germany' to me - one of the lesser known ones.

I thought Christine's jug looked vaguely familiar and I finally managed to find this one that also has the flattened/slightly textured top of the handle and the polished pontil.  Height 10.5".  Maybe the additional shape will help.

Certainly looks like a cousin.

You cannot get thumbnails to show any more; the option doesn't exist. Just use links

I've got a decanter with that base - also on top of my kitchen shelves, in a browny-black sort of smoke colour. The glass of the decanter is much thicker than the glass of the Caithness bit.
pics later..... it will involve ladders etc.
