Sommerso vase.... odd finish?
« on: July 11, 2012, 03:06:10 PM »
Hello all :)

I have this vase in sommerso style and presumably from Murano. It did have some sort of label when I bought it from an estate sale (with stuff circa 50's -60's things) so I guess its not new. Apparently that the blue is not super vivid is also a sign that it is older. The label was unreadable and a bit dirty so I removed it (apparently naughty I am told). There are no signatures and only a few small scratches on the bottom.

But what is this textured finish? I cannot seem to find any examples of it... even after trawling through a compendium of Italian glass techniques. It looks like its been rolled in blue and clear glass sand that's been melted to the outer surfaces. It does gear things with the light (which is why I bought it!)

Anyhow, I'm guessing someone here knows something... :)

I was going to sell it as I'm moving os, but after reading up about it.. I'm growing more attached.

Many thanks
Ish

Hi and welcome! I'm afraid I'm not the person you need, Murano is not my field, but this is something rather special, I think.
It is stunning - and your pics are lovely. Could we please have a shot of the base too? We like looking at the bottoms.

Do the green or yellow bits glow in sunlight - or do you have an ultra-violet (black) light you can shine on them?
They look as if they might be Uranium!
Somebody will know what it is, I'm sure.  :)

Overshot is the name of the technique, often used in early 20th Century Murano and by Fratelli Toso in the 1950's to 1960's.  I don't have my files available to me right now, but I don't think this has much age, and I seem to recall an attribution of Chinese.

It's still a striking piece.

Overshot! Yes thats it :) Thank you for your replies.

Ok, have attached some pics of the bottom (and sorry I posted the same pic set twice before, how odd). As to a black light.. umm, I'll ask around for one. It looks a bit weird in the light and now I'm curious... So black light will be definitive as too uranium glass?

There are some small bubbles and bits inside the glass if I look very close,  is this normal? I just read that overshot can be used to cover up bad batches of glass as well.

As to Chinese make - would the glass itself be perfect/clean or does this mean much? I guess I don't really mind if its chinese make, its pretty :) but if its something special I'll give out too my mum for safe keeping!

Thanks again :)
Cheers
Ish

I don't think it is Chinese IMO. Am trying to rack my brain as I have seen a handful of pieces over the years and one with a label. But it is not ringing a bell. This piece is very well made with clean lines and a good colour combination. Chinese sommerso tends to lack an eye for colour combination in sommerso pieces. The inner layer of blue with the overshot matches well. And the green matches well.

A check with a blacklight would be helpful.

Just an idea: could it be rather contemporary Czech glass?

If you look through the >> Princ Glass site, there are a lot of vases in similar style (sommerso with textured surface, opposite sides with cut facets...)

The overshot is very similar to cat no.: 16825/26, about a 1/4 of the way down the page. Also saw this on ebay...

Very well made and I don't think it is Chinese. Close relative?
