Barrel Shape Bottle Green Glass Vase or Drinking vessel?
« on: July 15, 2012, 04:56:16 PM »
Hi,  I recently purchased the Vase/Drinking Vessel and hope someone will be able to identify it.  My first thoughts were that it could be Sklo Union and now not sure.  I have tried various sites but I have not been able to find one like this.  Can anyone tell me what this is and who made it.  I appreciate your help in anticipation.  Height 11.8cm, Base dia. 5.8cm.  Concave pontil 4.3cm.  The barrel section looks as if it has been put together in two sections and then joined to the base.  There are clear signs of air pockets within the glass but this is minimal.  There is also a slight lip around the outer rim area.  With the base area there is a large thumb nail mark.

This is not Sklo Union because it is blown glass. Sklo Union is almost exclusively pressed glass. You also do not join pieces like this; you join handles and stems and bits of decoration but you do not make something in two halves and join them. It looks like this has been blown into a two-part mould. You open the mould to take it out.

I see! so this is how it has been made.   I doubted it being Sklo Union.  The base just did not seem right and now confirmed as not Sklo Union, any ideas as to who made it and period?  I have owned a similar shape to this, but it is not glass and called the Holkham Owl Eye. The only difference is. that this apart from being glass, also has 15 elongated flat sides, that is, 5 on the front of the barrel and 10 at the back.  I would say it is a drinking vessel, judging by the inverted handle area.  The base area that meets with a flat surface, definitely shows signs of ware and guessing it could be a 1960's piece?  ::)
