Blue Glass bowl with boy on fish
« on: March 13, 2013, 01:00:00 PM »
Hello, just found this forum and hope somebody could give me some more info on this bowl and an idea of the value. It forms part of my late fathers estate and I think may have been my grandmothers. So I'm guessing its 1930's but I may be way off. Its 3 pieces with a black circular stand (maybe bakerlite). The blue glass bowl itself, and a center piece that has holes in the base (Im guessing for flower stems) consisting of a boy sitting on a large fish. Over to you folks, any info very much appreciated.

Ian

Welcome to the board. Lovely. Unfortunately he's one of those unknowns and is likely Czech or German. Your date is about right. The plinth will be black (very, very deep purple really) glass

Thank you would you have any idea of value?, I don't intend selling it but would love an idea for insurance. Im really pleased to have something from that era that has been through two generations

We don't give valuations, sorry, they are too subjective

I've seen this set attributed to the German firm Schweig Müller (I think based on the bowl design matching known Schweig Müller patterns). Sadly I don't have any catalogues to confirm this, but others on the board may be able to offer more info.

Ok no problem, I don't really care if its £5 or £500 I love it and will keep it to pass on to my family

It's probably worth something inbetween those two figures!
Valuations are very difficult - you can try to find something the same on ebay and watch to see what it sells for, which would give you a rough idea. But the price something goes for depends on where it is being sold and who the audience is, and once one piece has sold, that's one potential buyer out of the picture. It also depends on market trends and the weather on the day... and what colour eyes you have...  ::)

For insurance, I would imagine £200 would cover it generously. But I haven't a clue how scarce this particular set is, and not knowing the maker's name doesn't help.  :'(

woops! Welcome to the gmb! :)
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

That bowl does come with Mueller ladies.

I know that because it is one of the only items I have ever had broken in the post.
