Thanks Sue. I have a feeling I've come across this design before but my memory fails me. The Channel Islands haven't produced glass like this, have they?

Do you mean Guernsey? That tends to be marked - and the tops very, very frilly - sort of ruffley crimped - but I have not seen or handled very much of it at all.  Then there was St. John's Crystal - but  they tended to stick to emulating Azurene - with silver or gold foil on, and it was mostly animally things...

I've found Gibratar Crystal's web page! (having got confused about how to spell it - I thought the r on the end was just how it is pronounced in England - I didn't think it really existed - then it wanted me to download an adobe thingy that I suspect is not compatible with our pc.  in order to see everything properly.)

Doh!  I omitted to tell you that the piece is surface decorated. Apologies for that Senior moment.

I've had a good feel of the little bit in the shop.
It's not nearly as lightweight as flamework; it is probably slightly heavier than Alum Bay. It is surface decorated. The base indents and there is a circular mark - it looks as if the pontil scar has been heat-treated and flattened into a little round - not as if extra blob of glass has been applied, but it results in a circular flat bit.

You are virtually desribing this vase here. The indent has certainly been smoothed although there is still a bit of sharp edging.

I felt guilty about copping a feel and then reporting back here! It was in Oxfam, and I used to be a voluteer there, so I have just bought it.  It's in its original box.
When I defrost enough, I'll get the camera out.
I suspect, given the weirdness of the base finish, and all the other features, that Gibralter Glass might be your answer.  :)

Gibralter glass isn't somthing that we see much of - it's no bad thing to have a reference bit for any future enquiries.
(I still can't get used to the notion that there is a real r at the end of the name!  :-\ )
