thank you Sue...         must admit I had overlooked the fact that the E & L shape is indeed different to these pieces which show a flared rim and waisted body, and the knop which I'd already mentioned (and missing the thistle engraving).
Hate making assumptions - but in view of the comments in Woodwards book, I'm assuming that this very popular pattern remained in production by E. & L. post the company name change around 1955  -  so presumably essential to look at the style of backstamp in order to discover whether before or after this date.
My personal opinion is that these are not a product from E. & L.

Just the very flared rim alone seems (to me) to be far too flamboyant for E&L or Edinburgh.
Not that I know much about, or have a huge interest in, cut glass. I do try to pay attention to it when out and about though.
I have noticed that both Edinburgh and E&L tend to be very... staid, safe and ultra-conservative when it comes to design.
