Opalescent Goblet/Candle Holder. Id request
« on: March 19, 2013, 02:24:54 AM »
Can someone help me identify and date this please.   Enamelled applied pattern design with engraved crossed etching around the top half. The crossed etching lines on close up inspection are not parallel and some of the lines do continue under the 'circled' enamel patterns lines, with some running straight through.  The goblet/candle holder has a high pitched ring tone even when held firmly by the base.  Would this indicate as having crystal content?  The paintwork and engraved markings are all hand applied, as no specific pattern is identical.  The gold guilt paintwork which also is around the rim opening, the single rib neck and upper base rim, does show signs of ware.   The base, measuring 7.6 dia.  Approximately 1.4cm from the base edge leading towards the centre is slightly concaved.  If blown glass I would assume this will be the pontil?   If it is the pontil area, it is mottled/textured.   Ive not seen this colour before and not having much luck with my research.  The Goblet/Candle Holder is approx. 11.4cm in height.

Almost certainly Bohemian and late 19C/early 20C. It's mould blown but it does not have a pontil mark. It would have been cracked off the pontil iron at the top - the rim will be cut and ground. The lines you describe as etching were probably gilded originally - they are not etched.

Well I never! under closer magnification, some of the cross hatch lines do have specks of gold guilt which confirms what you have said.  Pleased to know that this is a Bohemian piece though and the period is even better.  A very unusual colour though and not a colour in glass I've seen before, if I can recall.  ::)  Thank you for your info.  Very much appreciated Christine.

The squat shape is also quite unusual

Almost certainly Bohemian

Whilst researching this item due to the slight uncertainty and not ruling out that it is Bohemian, I came across this bottle with the same type of coloured glass and applied white enamel. This also is 19th century blown glass, but not mould blown.  Would this Bristol glass be a plausible attribute to assist in the  possibility of a positive identification?

Your link has an extra letter http://www.rubylane.com/item/477409-A7/Victorian-Bristol-Glass-Clambroth-Barber#.UHIQnquTyl4.pinterest

Unfortunately what is written there is a load of rubbish. It is mould blown (hand blown into a mould admittedly but not free blown, even the stopper, which has been crimped after removal from the mould). It is not Bristol and still most probably Bohemian

Oh! dear, ::)  :o  one shall have to refrain from using Ruby lane as a reference guide. :-X  Thank you for the correction and  assertive info.   I will retreat and continue my investigations elsewhere. :)

It's like using ebay; don't believe it unless you can back it up from reliable sources  ;)
