Topic: Andrew Sanders signed, small footed bowl - posting for reference

I picked this up with the blue mystery pieces I posted about in Glass, but I do know who made this as it's signed clearly on the side: Andrew Sanders. There's no date, and this finish is not shown in their current range on the website for Wallace and Sanders. They trade from www.kingstreetworkshops.co.uk at Pateley Bridge, in Yorkshire.

To describe the bowl... inside it's white mottled over black glass, like clouds, and very smooth and shiny. The foot is the same effect white on clear, but the sides of the foot have a sort of matte iridescence. The black outside of the bowl also has a matte iridescence, almost a bronze tinge to it and with a fine crackle effect, achieved I suppose by a thin spray of something on the outside of the bowl and then it was popped back into the heat to do something!

Dimensions are:
height = 85mm; foot diameter = 45mm; rim diameter = 70mm; overall diameter = 90mm; weight = 500g.

I have always felt that Sanders and Wallace are the unsung heroes of British Studio Glass.

This page on their website http://www.kingstreetworkshops.co.uk/glassmakers/profile.php gives the history of the studio.

They are one of the longest established, continuously running studios in the UK, which is no mean feat.

I hadn't realised they were one of the earliest ones, Adam, thank you.  I was delighted when I found this bowl. Having found it, I'm now hoping we may be able to make a trip over the border into Yorkshire to see them at work and maybe acquire some more!

Just a wee update on this piece. Andrew Sanders has just told me, "that is one of my monochrome bowls inspired by raku tea bowls." I just love it when the creator tells me what his inspiration was to make something. I love this bowl!

Thanks Sue, it has a lovely feel to it as well, slightly rough on the outside and silky smooth inside.
