Small Amberina Cased Glass Jug
« on: April 06, 2013, 05:51:09 AM »
Here is another piece I am stumped on. I hope someone can help with identifying the maker and approximate date of manufacture. It stands 6 inches high and has an all over swag type of pattern and an applied amber glass handle. Rough pontil mark on the base. Fine white layer on the inside.

thanks in advance for any help
cheers
Auliya

I can't edit the title of this thread, but I have been informed by a couple of different people that this is actually "peachblow" glass and quite possibly Wheeling peachblow, by Hobbs, Brockunier & Co. Can anyone confirm or otherwise? I am adding a photo of the base as well. I said previously that the pontil was rough - it isn't rough, it is quite smooth to touch, but not polished.

I don't know who made your vase (though a US maker looks a good bet) but I do know it hasn't got a pontil mark. That base is just a result of cooling. The jug was cracked off the pontil iron at the top not at the bottom.

Hello

Long called Wheeling Drape (incorrectly as it turns out) we now know that the Phoenix Glass Co. of Phillipsburg (now Monaca), PA made your pitcher in the 1880s.  Very nice and unusual shape.

Thank you so much for that information. I had Wheeling peachblow suggested a number of times, however it just didn't quite fit with what I could find online. I couldn't find a similar shaped top or handle in the Hobbs pieces for examples. Do you have any links to similar Phoenix glass?

again, many thanks
cheers

Phoenix made this drape optic pattern in many shapes and colour combinations.   I would suggest Phoenix Art Glass by Leland Marple as the best (and really only) refererence for 19th century Phoenix art glass production.

To follow up on Sid's attribution, Phoenix Drape Optic Pattern can be found beginning on pg. 78 through pg. 81 of Marple's reference with 10 color plates. As usual Sid's sharp eyes are invaluable with this type of glass. Ken

I have found a few bits of Phoenix Glass with the drape pattern, but not in the "peachblow" colour - all cranberry and white online. I haven't found a base similar online either. I am afraid that finding specialist American glass books in libraries in Australia is pretty much impossible, so I won't be looking at the book :-( But thank you so much for your information, much appreciated.

Hello

Here are a couple of links to Phoenix Drape items with colours similar to your example:

http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/5715061
http://www.mogmia.com/MOGMIA%20Virtual%20Tours%20Info%20Pages/Hobbs.html
http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/15407870_phoenix-drape-optic-vase
http://www.burchardgalleries.com/auctions/2004/jul1804/01images/l222.htm

Unfortunately, several of these are misidentified as Hobbs.  Hobbs did not make this drape optic but it is apparently more difficult to get new information out than it is to stop propagating old misinformation.
