Leveille?? Vase, spatter w/gold decoration, square rim
« on: April 14, 2013, 11:22:29 PM »
I've had this vase for near a decade, and just came across an almost identical one being referred to as Leveille, or Leveille-Rousseau. I'm having some difficulty finding much good info out there. If anyone has any ideas for me,  it would really be helpful!
The vase is made of an almost smoky transparent glass, with a white, rust, and dark oxblood/ brown spatter look. Decorated with a gold floral design.
Lots of wear to base, and measures 6" tall by just under 6" in diameter.
Thank you so much for your time and advice~

From what I gather, Cristallerie de Sevres did a similar piece so I find it difficult to be sure with these pieces. However there are some out there in a similar vein to yours, that are signed.  It might be worth trying to pull together pics of all the signed pieces and seeing if you can match any details.
Nice vase!

Edited to add
This one is unsigned but is attributed to Leveille and looks to be a very similar shape

this one is very similar to yours but is attributed as there is  no mention of signature (and I've found a good few pieces on Von Z which have been incorrectly attributed) - however have linked it for reference

Thank you m- I have started putting together a reference folder of some pieces with signatures. The photo in your link is almost spot-on! I found this example with a signature, and couldn't help but notice how very similarly ground the base of the signed piece is to the base of mine. I don't know if this makes an ounce of difference or not- just something to "chew on".
Here is the link to the page with the photo of the signature.

I am also throwing on some closer photos of the base of mine.
Thanks again m! The search continues...

'I' think the base is right, however, it's also possible Cristallerie de Sevres made their bases in a similar way.  Most of my French vases have a large polished pontil mark.  And I am no expert lol, I've only seen what I've seen online and on my own pieces.
I also think your vase looks right, because of the way the spatter is done, and I can't explain that but there's something different about the Sevres vases to the Leveille pieces I think.  But if I were you, I would need more than my instinct to go on  ;D
The shape match would be good if it were to a near signed piece, finding a match to the spatter, or near enough would be good, and I do think you might find something very similar to the enamelling and maybe differences in the way the Sevres pieces were enamelled maybe.

Love the shape and the vase.

m- I know what you mean about the spatter "looking right", I get that "feeling" too. I agree that we do need more than that, however!
Take a look at this one- it has less wear on the gold than mine does, and has a gold rim (mine probably did too, a LONG time ago!)
I dropped them an email, asking how they were able to verify, so hope to hear something back- I'll let you know if I do.

Under the American category the #58 Steuben vase (both colors) are Beaumont with Wheeling Decorating's "Drapes" treatment.  Beaumont & Wheeling Decorating were just a few streets apart from one another.

Ok, I got a response from the site owner, and it is totally not what I'd expected to hear!!!
Her exact words:

Hi, I am in the process of updating my site. Actually, I am sure I was wrong on this one. It's Legras/mont joye. It's shown in the new Legras book.

HUH????
Guess I'll be looking into finding "that" book...

Legras is good also :)  (I thought I'd seen them id'd as Sevres somewhere but must have been mistaken)

I've wondered about these vases for a while and looked at them but never decided not to buy an unmarked one because I couldn't be sure.
This one here is a signed Leveille vase - it has the oxblood spatter which you can see clearly and on the close ups you can see some white spatter as well. Over the top it has been  etched on the inside and then on the outside gold enamelled.

I can see where the attribution on many unmarked pieces may have come from looking at that one.

adding to my reply directly above
Cappa 'Le Genie Verrier De L'Europe shows two unsigned pieces attributed to Sevres with a similar spatter type decor and colours  -
one on page 416  - vase with two handles and a richly gilded neck collar
one on page 419 - Footed ewer with stopper and handle with enamel/gilt floral decoration

The body decor of the ewer in particular is remarkably similar.  Both are unsigned.
This must be where I remembered it from.
