Iceberg Rock I.D Request
« on: May 10, 2013, 08:57:58 PM »
Purchased this glass mirrored effect rock.   Ive looked under crystals, flint etc.  in order to not only provide the correct description, but also to find out where it actually originted from.   My difficulty is that I am unable to relate this to any other 'cyrstal' glass pieces I have, that is, the composition made up to it's present form.   The iceberg is very pure in colouration and not something I have seen before.  The edges are jagged with polished flat surfaces.  When you look through the glass the opposite side around the edges and corners look like silver.   Can anyone help me with a possible explanation please? :)

Approx. Measurements: 8.3cm x 5.4cm x 5.9cm

I can tell you what it looks like & nothing else...a piece of Cullet that someone has polished up a bit.  Slightly reminds me of some of the iceberg Scandinavian pieces, but no cut/engraved scene.

A cullet, so that is what it is called.  Thank you ever so much.   I have two others, which I intended to post separately, but don't think this will be necessary.  I must say, they do look nice as decorative pieces, but my friend has other ideas and wants the iceberg for healing purposes. ;D

I'm not suggesting w/friars for one minute but they did used to sell lumps of cullet and it was also used as a garden feature in the 1980's think a trend started at Chelsea flower show one year.

And Lesly Pike engraves lumps of cullet such as this beautifully. Have a look at "Endangered" here.

Cullet is also a term used for lumps of glass put into the pot for melting a batch. It doesn't have to be a big beautiful lump.

Just enjoy it.

Cullet was/is also sold to decorate fish tanks, though that does look like good quality glass, perhaps lead crystal

Now, that really would be the best possible thing to do with it, Otis, if you're not keeping it.

Allow Lesley to elevate it to a piece of great Art.  :)
