Hi John.

Someone on GMB may be able to give a quick, confident ID for this, but it looks unusual to me.  The 'button base' style is quite like Whitefriars, but they do not look to me like Whitefriars canes - they have an air of antique French about them.  Also the profile looks odd - though it may have been repolished, I suppose.  Another maker in Europe to use this style of base is Val St Lambert, and although their antique paperweight designs are fairly well known, they kept making some throughout the 20th century.  Another thought I have is that Alistair Ross made some unusual weights at Pairpoint in the late 20th century with canes he had collected on his travels.

Does it feel like lead crystal glass - ie, is it heavy?

Good afternoon ,

  Thanks for your response.   It is fairly heavy and does not look to have been polished.   Based on the auction pictures I purchased it from it looked French. When it arrived today I was surprised by it's larger size and weight as well as the button base. I had not seen one like it.   Prior to being sold on ebay it came from a New England USA estate sale.
