Glass Bowl ID Help
« on: June 07, 2013, 03:58:16 PM »
My mother had this and always called it "Elephant Glass". No idea why.
Ruffled edges, 12" across, 4-3/4" high. I tried to finding pics online to help ID it but had no luck. Any help is appreciated.

Hello Pat welcome to the Glass Message Board.
This looks like a really pretty bowl but you will need to read the Introductory thread about resizing pictures so it is a lot larger.

Also, please may we have a picture of the base and the rim, and perhaps even a close up of the pattern so we can help you as best as possible.
Rosie.

Hello Pat,  I think this could possibly be the inner part of what is called a 'Brides Basket'.

These sat in a metal frame  (silver?), and were usually frilly edged and either enamelled glass or the pattern was added to the glass during the making.
Have a look through the pictures of Frilled glass on Google,  there seem to be several on there, and many have their makers names.

Please come back and let us know if this sounds correct and if you find a match for your bowl and the maker.
In the meantime I will keep looking as well.
Rosie.

Yes its a Bride's bowl. You can put either "opalescent brides bowl or opaescent brides basket" into the eBay search box & check both active & completed auctions to see examples. A word about attributions on these types of bowls as maybe (and its a big maybe) 20% of the attributions are accurate simply because just about every glass manufacturer from the 1890s to 1910 in the U.S. made them & at times under subcontract from silverplate companies not to metion those imported from Europe.  Fenton also made them for years although yours seems to be an older one.

Lots to see with attributions although as Ohio says, may not always ne correct.
I thought your's might be Webb, but could be wrong.

The clear foot makes me wonder if it's not relatively new, i.e., mod 20C onwards
