ID Help Please - Modern 1979 Overlay Millefiori plus
« on: June 14, 2013, 02:03:29 AM »
This paperweight has me stumped.  It is a modern paperweight with millefiori on the surface and inside the glass.  The exterior is a gold foil overlay with extra surface decoration.  The shape is a cylinder with four side facets and one top facet.  It is 3 5/8" high by 2" diameter.  The inner design resembles an underwater scene with millefiori flowers, seaweed and bubbles.

It is signed with two names (connected with an ampersand) and a date 1979.  I can't read the names although the first appears to be something like Karantz or Karanz.  The second name starts with a W.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Allan.   Just wondering if it could be Sanders & Wallace?   Hard to tell the signature from the pix.   Timeline just fits - they started around 1978 I think.   But I'm far from convinced.

I too am very curious as to whom the maker is...
I've see this makers mark 3 times (2 weights and 1 vase) all in very similar styles with millefiori threading and overlay.

If it helps - Here is another current example from what I  believe is the same artist:

I think it might be Larcomb & Wicht. They were making these sorts of items in the mid to late 70's. They were based in western Ohio and I believe graduated from the Ohio Univeristy glass program. He committed suicide in the late 70's and that was end of their glassmaking as far as I know. I had a piece or two of theirs at one time. Sally was Wicht's first name and as I recall Larcomb may have been Gerald. They made some very nice pieces.

Fuhrman Glass had the correct id.  A Big Thank You.  It is Gerald Larcomb & Sally Wicht.  I found a picture of a 1970 bowl attributed to them with the same signature.  Once I had the correct name, it was almost possible to read the signature.   :)

They had an exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1980.  I also found an article about a 1983 show of Ohio Artists in which they won an award (Mindscape Gallery, Evanston, IL) in the April 10, 1983 Toledo Blade.   So they were working until at least the start of 1983.

Really nice, and very similar to some Okra pieces!
