Antique Silver Overlay Stemware
« on: June 22, 2013, 02:52:22 PM »
Not sure where to get more info on these.  If GMB is not the right form and someone can recommend an alternative I'd appreciate it.

Champagne stems... 5-1/4" tall,  3" diameter foot,  3-3/8" diameter rim.
Hollow stem.   8-sided cut stem.

Silver overlay is marked: 999/1000 FINE  76  (no other mark found on the silver or the glass itself)

These stems, I believe, could easily date to 1876 but from what little I've read silver overlay via deposit wasn't done until about 1890. Do you all think that's what the "76" is, a date?  if not what then?

Would like to see if I can find out who made them.
Would the glass and the overlay work have been done by two different companies?
Could the glass be considerably older than the overlay work?

As always, many thanks.

Cannot help with ID, however your stems are not 19th century, they are 20th century Nouveau period maybe 1910-1915 & a wide number of companies especially in the Corning NY area did this type of work. Could be someone like Hawkes you did both glass & silver work & with Hawkes during this period when they did a stem set they usually signed only one in the set which many don't seem know. Then again it could be someone like La Pierre, Richter, Flogel, Alvin, etc. who during this period bought blanks from manufacturers & added the overlay...selling them under their name.

Thanks Ohio.

Yes I kinda figured out the silver work couldn't be 19th C.   I think the '76' must be a pattern identifier of some kind.  In my searches I'd run across some other Overlay that had '999/1000 FINE nnn' where nnn was some number.   Gorham and Alvin were a couple names I had looked at briefly already.  Your other names gives me some more search opportunities  :P

Duncan also made stems like these, but I don't know about the overlay

Thanks for the reply Uphoosier.    Dunken, Seneca Morgantown, Fostoria and many more made variations of the cut hollow stems.  I've got some books that I'm going through but slowly.

So far online I found a couple potential candidates for matches to the glass blank based on measurement and shape  but unfortunately it's listed the maker as unknown.

and this ended ebay listing....

I think as Ohio suggested looking at the silver companies might be the way to go.

I have a third stem but it has a  chip at the rim. exposing the the glass side of the silver.   The silver is tougher, maybe thicker, than I expected.
