Pink & blue swirl Mdina globe vase?
« on: June 30, 2013, 08:05:05 PM »
Thought this was rather interesting, I don't know  a lot about Mdina but looks like a globe vase but no button rim, the rim looks a bit like an inside or similar to the Hartley Wood ones that have just been 'sheared' off.
I know Mdina did pink vases with the blue applied trailing but this is quite different it just feels early in fact till I turned it over my first thoughts were IoW ?
Will try for a photo now but it's a bit gloomy, if it looks interesting I will take some more tomorrow.

Seen a pink swirled on it's own before with this shape but not seen it mixed with blue like that.

Ditto! These are circa '80s aren't they John?
I do (reluctantly) have a couple of examples of this spiralled pink colourway (hidden away in the attic, out of sight) - but as you said, not with blue in.

I would assume 80s too Sue, plus or minus the odd year...

The pink only variant can be found in the onion vase shape as well as a smaller version of this shape (almost like an inside out vase), probably other shapes too but don't remember any offhand.

I've got one of the v-shaped bowls (normally called bullet bowls, aren't they?) in this colourway - again, I was forced/bullied  into buying it and it is hidden in the attic. Think I'd even an onion a miss in this lurid colour!

(sorry, my aversion to this colour is well known, and I'm feeling utterly rotten so I'm grumpy)
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

The reason I put it on was because I cannot recall seeing another piece in this colourway (pink & blue swirls) also don't think the shape is that common either with the  inside out type sheared rim?
I had a good look through your (John) and Suzy's albums and searched loads of images to find something similar but came up with nothing either colour or shape.
I know quite a few collectors ( Suzy) for one who collect both Mdina and IoW who like the pink and blue swirls.
Personally I don't like Pink either Sue but that is not what the thread was about it was simply posted asking for opinions from members far more knowledgeable than I  on the colourway and shape being quite unusual.
At the moment it's a rare shape in an unusual colourway  ;D
More photos added without flash showing the blue better a lot paler more like IoW also a photo of the script.
Forget to add the size it's 4" high and quite heavy at 750g
Cheers Chris

I don't know anybody who collects late Mdina and would have enough to make a judgement on rarity.

Hopefully there is someone around though and they will appear to prove me wrong.

It does seem to be quite thick?
I do have a couple of very thick "inside-out" style pieces in "Tiger" - (I do quite like some early Tiger, but that is about as late as I do like.) I'm not sure what Suzy would think of this.  :-\
Perhaps this is a slightly taller "variation" on shape?
But I would think Nemmie is correct.

The pink swirly stuff isn't that common, going by what I have seen over the years. I don't think it could have been produced for very long, and with blue is certainly unusual, chriscooper.

Hi Denver, when you say late Mdina do you mean made yesterday Mdina?
I tend to class 'early' as '68 to '72 then up to '80 'earlyish'
I appreciate they have been going for over 40 years and made loads of different patterns. I don't collect anything new or old but have been doing glass for more years than I care to remember and see Mdina everywhere so thought this piece unusual in both colours and shape, don't recall and cannot find anything in pink and blue swirls and not much with the inside out type neck finish which I thought in it's self is unusual. I suppose it could have been made yesterday though the inclusions and black bits in the mix, the base wear and the script make me 'feel' it wasn't.
The 'rarity' bit was tongue in cheek by the way :)

Chris

Just seen your reply Sue thank you, what about the nice neat script does that tell us anything or cancel out 'made yesterday'

Chris :)
