Author Topic: Latest buy, Ercole Barovier or Napoleone Martinuzzi? (Read 6001 times)

Just had to share my latest buy which arrived today and I think is super, but he brings a problem with him. Initially I though he was probably by Martinuzzi, but the more I look at him and with the eyes and ears, I'm now convincing mysely he's by Barovier. Time for a second opinion, Laura, Javier or someone HELP!!!!

Thanks Ray it's a stylised greyhound, bloomin long legged rats you have up there.

The overall shape is quite well documented and I've also seen an example in amber glass by Flavio Poli for IVAM from around 1930/31 and I'm pretty sure this one dates from a similar time.

Well I did say in a posting on the glass board that I admit to somewhat dubious taste, but I absolutely love this and if I'm right it's a very rare piece, not that I'll ever sell it, it's going into my menagerie.

Paul, you're not the only one with dodgy taste around here - my house is stuffed full of things that other people describe as 'different' or 'unusual' - when I know what they really want to say is 'urgh' LOL Suffice to say I like your greyhound/rat cross thingummyjig too.

I think the piece is really nice.
For me the more unusual the better

I was thinking of bidding on it myself!

On the maker, I thought the piece being lattimo and gold, that it could be a Barovier Seguso Ferro piece. I've been told that the company made similar items to Poli, Toso, Martinuzzi, etc. while they were in business.
Thats my guess.

Thanks Javier I've noticed that virtually all the Martinuzzi pieces have whire eyes, whereas the Barovier examples almost all have black eyes and in the book "Animals in Glass" there is a bear by Barovier item no 38 that looks strikingly similar albeit with applied fur to the legs.

Paul, can I ask you how big it is? I've not really looked at this type of thing before and I'm interested in keeping my eyes open for them now I've seen your crazy dog. It's hard to tell how big it is though from the picture.

It's 9 inches from nose to tail and a deceptively heavy, but that's normal for lattimo pieces.
