no, no...........it's    'by whom' ;D ;D

never heard of Mitchells & Butlers (is that what it's saying)  -  tell us who they were/are................  but you're never going to find a maker for this one Keith. :D

So, what does it have under the foot - remnants of a gadget mark perhaps.  :)

Sorry, ::) Paul,if you were from the Midlands you would know that M&B's were a very large brewery based in Cape Hill,B'ham, the foot has very little marks on the base except for wear, forgot to post a pic' as my camera is bust, just wondered if the moulding was indicative of a certain maker, never mind it can go in the 'local social history' collection, ;D ;D

apologies Keith - regret I don't have your knowledge of B'ham breweries :)           glasses made with this slight optic moulding and of a cheap quality were made very commonly - often carrying an ad. in the form of a transfer or whatever, and I suppose the proximity to Stourbridge means a variety of possibly makers.               I just thought that if it had a gadget mark, you could at least tie it down to the late C19.
I've a pint tankard with wording  'Ask for Taylor Walker's Barley Mow' and 'British Made'.
I think your idea of that new home is a good suggestion.

It can't be older than 1898, because that's when Mitchells and Butlers formed but the squffiiness makes me think it's not much newer
