candle holder with silver foil inclusions - Murano?
« on: August 16, 2013, 07:06:34 PM »
Just wondering if this is Murano, it is a clear glass candle holder which has silver foil inclusions.

Has a ruffled edge, wrythen body with a stem for a candle at the centre, pedestal base with a rough snapped pontil.

3½" total height
4" diameter approximately

Looks like Murano to me. I believe the silver  pieces are mica.

What is the approximate age of this candle holder?

I doubt it could be attributed to a maker, as there are so many different Murano glass makers,

I have seen something similar after doing a little more research and it was attributed as made by Salviati by the seller, not exactly the same, but had the mica inclusions and clear glass.

Thank you again.

The way the inclusions are distributed I would believe these are, in fact, silver foil. When blowing out glass which has been rolled in foil, the foil will crack and show channels; when blowing out further the rest of the structure goes but the channels remain.  And I thought Mica was sprinkled on....

Thank you Ivo, I did initially think that it was silver foil inclusions personally, hence why I said that in my original post, but I am not an expert and willing to learn more and I have learnt something today from you, how to tell the difference between mica and silver foil.

I agree with Ivo in that it is Silver foil. The distribution is such that it is possible to see "how it came apart as it expanded". You  do not see these types of patterns in Mica use. It is generally much more random in nature.

As to the seller offering a similar item as Salviati, I believe am quite familiar with the listing and the seller, and do not believe there is anything at this point to substantiate the attribution other than wishful thinking..... which that particular seller does a lot of.

Pictures of the pieces I think you are referring to, used with the permission of the original ebay seller that sold these to the current seller, can be found here:

Thanks Craig for the reply, I think we are talking about the same listing, I came across it yesterday on ebay. Thank you for the link to the other thread, interesting reading.

I will do some more research on this piece, but doubt I will find out much!

Thanks again.
