Thorn vase, a question...
« on: August 30, 2013, 06:00:41 PM »
Was there a discussion recently about being able to identify who made them by the way the feet are applied, had a look in search 'mode' but nothing, got this today,7.5 inches tall,no damage and what looks like a missing foot is,I presume, part of the finishing process, ;D

The finish looks right for it having been like that from the start - hot-worked.
I had a Richardson acorn with a missing foot. It had been broken off - I could tell because of the smoothly polished finish.
I can't help with id-ing makers by feet application, sorry. I tend to just go by how much I like these beasts.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Nice one Keith. I agree with Sue that it looks original. It was a theory Bernard had if that helps

it was to do with Walsh and the way the feet were applied in two's and crossed over each other iirc?
I think it was an American lady who posted her piece and the conversation developed from that.
I'll try and find it for you.

Keith,

Definitely made as is. What may look like a missing leg is a prunt applied to cover the pontil scar after the rod was cracked off.

Yours is very much like one I have and I would say they were made by the same company. They may even be parts of the same full table set ( * ) with yours being a step or two closer to the main central piece than mine.

( *) Large centrral piece with, in each opposite direction, other pieces stepping down in size.
