Little plant pots would stand on the ribs, they wouldn't neccessarily need the tray to have drainage holes...

not a problem Paul  ;) - just a matter of knowing the energy given off during fluoresence is in the form of light, something I'm very familiar with from years of lab work.

Many thanks for your interesting replies folks :)

For info David, the inside measurement to the rim top is 1½".  Its slightly higher to the outside rim top as there is a bit of a recess where a lid may well have sat. (The external height is 2").   I can't see any other markings.
