Venetian Ripple T/Webb vase with u. foot.
« on: November 07, 2013, 10:52:51 PM »
Not a colour combination that I recall seeing before.                    A similar shape seems to occur in some of T/Webb Gay Glass range - at least I think so  -  although in the Sunshine Amber group the pieces appear to be uranium amber throughout.           The backstampl indicates this was made between approximately 1935 and 1950.           Anyone else have this combination of clear and Sunshine Amber?           It does glow quite well.

Interesting! That sort of two-colour combination is very common in US and Czech glass of the period but much less so here.

I would refer you to Webb Coronation Range which is mid-30s as well.  The base colour looks a smidgin darker than yours but the are most definitely bi-coloured.

thanks Ross.............    this is a new one on me - regret I don't think I've seen this Coronation range before.               Is the coloured part of the design a reactive glass do you know - and is there any reference to this product in any of the books that you can recall?
I wonder if the name was a reference to the Coronation of George VI, or just simply a regal sounding name? :)

I believe it was to celebrate George the Sixth's coronation.  Those goblets are wonderful for champagne - only takes 4 of the to empty a bottle but they sit in the hand superbly.  There is another range also called Coronation that has Black glass highlights and a slightly different engraving.  I have only ever seen tumblers of that style.  I have 8 goblets, 8 white wines and 8 tumblers - I use them all the time.

very nice indeed  -  do I get the impression this is a rare back stamp  -  perhaps a short-lived production period that occured during 1937 only.
If we don't have this backstamp in the Board's 'Glass Gallery', you might care to add Ross, if possible.                You sound very keen on using your drinking glasses :)
Thanks again.

I actually started buying them in 1998 in Brisbane - just in time for us to celebrate my aunt's 90th birthday with Asti Riccardona Spumante.  I had gone to look at an auction which had very few small and here were 4 goblets (worth at least $90 AU each in Melbourne).  So of course I asked the auctioneer what they were to which being a well researched man he responded Edinburgh Crystal.  Seeing he knew so much I asked what he thought they would go for - $40 he guessed.  He was right.  The next day I turned up and he asked for a start at $40 so with great reluctance just before he passed them in I bid $40 and they were mine for $44 including the 10% buyer premium.  Oh happy day!!!
