nice find Keith - the books seem more often to show these things in Vitro-Porcelain than clear, and this appears to be one curved end only, so you now need two straight troughs and another end                   Believe they date originally to about 1880, and assume they were intended as posy/flower holders.
We played oranges and lemons as children at birthday parties, and I'd always thought of Walter Crane's figures as being children  -  but just realized they appear much older, and wonder why he gave one of the characters a Tam o'Shanter (cap)  -  was he Scottish perhaps?

I acquired a couple of Chance "Oranges and Lemons" patttern sideplates recently. They're sort of square, but with very rounded edges. They're for Mr. E, if you'd like them, David.
If not, they can go back to a charity shop.

I met someone once who had a very large collection of these- that was her thing.  I think they are  lovely but I agree with Paul, they appear to have 'grown up' faces, which makes them curious.
