Help with unidentified Glasses
« on: February 10, 2014, 06:24:56 PM »
Could anyone identify these glasses. They seem to be of good quality, fine engraving, smooth polished bases, two patterns, 3 of each, and standing 10cms in height. They came along with a box of Edinburgh crystal. Thanks

Hello Smitty  -  welcome to the GMB :)
Regret to say that your pix are too small, and when enlarged become too blurred to be of any use.                When resizing, the first dimension needs to be 700  -   you should find information in this link which will help you.      http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/board,22.0.html

or to be a little more specific, this one is more concerned with re-sizing...  http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,34093.0.html

The pictures are much better, i'm struggling to find a pattern on a very similar shaped glass, it's a nightmare even when there signed, to me it does not look English but i might be wrong. regards Chris.

looks like we've not been successful on this occasion.

As you can imagine, drinking glasses are almost limitless in their variation and origin, and when unmarked they are often impossible to id.               At a quick first glance I thought the design might have been one of the States specialities  i.e.    buzzwheels, pinwheels or perhaps brunswick stars, but think not, and they're probably just examples of run of the mill cutting.
It was tempting I suppose to assume that because they were included with some E. Crystal that this would indicate a U.K. origin  -  having said that, I believe that recent or very recent pieces marked Edinburgh International are made in Czechoslvakia -  so this might have some bearing on the origin of these.

You say that these have smooth polished bases  -  which is a feature often of pieces from the Continent of Europe rather than the U.K. - and this might be worth following up.
There are internet sites that offer replacement services for glasses - most of which provide pix of named patterns  -  it's a useful facility that some GMB members use, and one that we recommend to people when we draw a blank with id.              Two sites worth checking out are...................
For U.K. material you might try.............    http://crystaldrinkingglasses.com/                 another is rather more universal in its coverage    http://www.replacements.com/index.htm

Thanks again for your help. I followed your advice and I'm now pretty sure that the glasses are Bohemian, possibly 1920s. I came across enough similar shapes and designs  on the sites you told me about ( although not exactly like mine) enough to put the file away for the time being.  Thanks again!
