The seller told me it came from a house clearance and the lady whose house it was, told her that it had been made by a relative.
Maybe the relative had a dremel?
A whole load of folk could have had a dremmeling wotsit on it, before the seller got hold of it.

There is absolutely no way of knowing how the marks got onto the base.
But they are
not Peter Layton's signature and it
is a bit of Mdina Earthtones.
What is worrying is that the bidding has gone a fair bit over what I would expect this sort of Earthtones vase to go for. The bidders appear to think it is the correct signature.
