ID for large Murano Barbini(?) Sommerso centrepiece
« on: February 14, 2014, 03:38:00 AM »
Hi everyone, new member here.

I have a few items in my collection which I thought I would get help in identifying.

The first item is a large (2kg) pink/green (I hope that these are accurate definitions for the colours!) centrepiece. It looks a lot like Murano Sommerso glass, perhaps Barbini? The bottom is very clean cut/polished (see photos attached)

Any help with identification would be greatly appreciated!

Kind regards,

Adam

Could be Japanese, some very nice glass is made there but it is not well documented here.

Thank you for the feedback!

Yes, I have some very nice Japanese glass so I know what you mean!

I was able to get this evaluated over the weekend and was told that it indeed is a Murano Sommerso Barbini piece (yay!).

Once again, thank you for your feedback!

Adam

I hate to say this but I think the appraiser may not be right because the technique is not sommerso. Sommerso means submerged, so you should see two or more colours submerged within each other like this excellent example. Sommerso does not have side by side colours.

I'm with John on Japanese though because of the colours, though the ribbing might be OK for Barbini

Thank you for your feedback!  :) Interesting! You certainly would hope that an appraisal from an auction house would be accurate... :-\ Looking inside the piece the colours do look merged, but I can see what you mean looking at the image kindly provided  :)

It seems to be the general thought on the message board that many auction houses know little about glass unless it's very high end or conveniently marked, and not always then.

It's a lovely piece whatever it is

Possibly Kamei Glass, and IMO definitely Japanese glass. A beautiful and attractive piece likely from the 70's onwards. This colour combo and the way it is done (not sommerso) is very typical of Japanese Glass from the late 60's onwards to the early 80's (possibly a bit later).
