is this Walsh 'Pompeian' please?
« on: March 15, 2014, 11:31:54 PM »
Glass with bubbles can be difficult to id at times, especially when there isn't a backstamp, but this one I believe could well be Walsh.
The u.v. torch produces a strong glow - the pontil depression is of good quality and polished, and most importantly it has a very strong similarity to the thistle shaped example in plate 20 on page 46 of Eric Reynolds book   -  'The Glass of John Walsh Walsh 1850 - 1951'.
I've also shown it together with another piece which I feel is definitely from that factory, and that glows as well - although neither piece has any markings  -  I did until recently have an another identical one of these small posy vases, and that was marked Walsh, and glowed.
This largere vase is 7.5" (190 mm) tall.

See the below link from Bernard for some interesting information on Walsh bubbly glass, especially paragraph 1a, but I'm unsure I follow the comments..........."It always matches in shape and size the Pompeian pattern information found in Factory pattern books "W" and "A" at the end of Eric's book."  - I don't know to which page or figure this refers to - but might be page 113.

There seems to be very little 'Pompeian' in my usual haunts now, perhaps it's getting scarce  - anyway this was only £1 so worth a punt - do people think this larger vase is Walsh? :)

thanks for that - it was the shape that was doing it for me.                 Regret I can't get too steamed up about pompeian  -  now if only this had been a piece of their cut glass :)          Is it of interest to you, some time?

Thanks but no thanks Paul. I already have the little vase and a goldfish bowl one in yellow - I think that's enough Pompeian  :-*
