Opalescent Hyacinth Vase? or just an odd shape?
« on: March 19, 2014, 08:46:25 PM »
I posted this a couple of years ago and have spent the last hour looking for the post and can not for the life of me find it....  My recollection is that it was ID'd pretty quickly....  so I finally gave up on finding the post and here it is again....

Seems it was ID'd as Richardson before, hence the image names.

4 high and 4.75 in diameter....

TIA Craig

Looking in Pamela's book, this does look very much like the Richardson design from 1886 - pattern No. 10242 - and the height given in the book is 10.5 cms., so agrees with yours.             It seems to have been a design characterized by this vertical white ish stripe  -  the book shows what appears to be a cranberry ground coloured example.
Other factories did make these squat shaped vases - S. & W., T/Webb, Stuart, but the Richardson designs seems to have the most 'squashed doughnut shape'.

Patricia's book is a very worthwhile investment - I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the history of glass. :)

Nice vase. But well researched and thanks for the recommendation, Paul, for "Pamela's" book – you must have talked to John Philip, who always refers to Patricia as "Pamela", "Petunia", "Priscilla" etc.  ;D

If we all just referred to them all as "P" it would likely clarify the confusion.....

And possibly also reduce the instances of embarrassment....  LOL

I was told by a dealer who had one at one of the Alexandra Palace antiques fairs a few years ago that this shape was by Stuart. But it does seem likely, as Paul says, that different factories made similar shapes.
