Amethyst Mdina carafe polished pontil but not base
« on: May 03, 2014, 06:09:38 PM »
Picked this up yesterday almost 12" tall Amethyst colour with the most gorgeous blue 'petrol on water ' shimmer  the casing has a green tint. Thought the base was quite unusual not a flat  ground and polished  finished in the normal way  but left rippled with a ground and polished pontil mark with a neat Mdina script within.
Photos taken with camera in poor light will take some more tomorrow.
Not seen many pieces finished this way could it be early and maybe a piece by the 'master' "Boffo"

No telling who made, it chriscooper, but I'm sure it is good and early. :)

These very large carafes are not that common, (I don't have one, just 2 big turquoise ones, although I know a couple of folk who do have amethyst ones.)

Most do have a round polished scar.
Although Boffo stayed on until '77, I'm not sure polished round pontil marks continued after MH left - there is no evidence either way.

Perhaps it might be safer to assume they refer to as late as '77, when Boffo did leave?

Your base wasn't ground and polished because it simply didn't need to be.
It had already been flattened sufficiently on the marver.

The script looks later, which is odd, but perhaps that's simply because it had to be small to get inside the scar.
It's not Dobson's writing, or MH's; just an ordinary script. On a very beautiful bit of glass.  8)

Some people have two large amethyst ones (ahem). One has a polished bottom, the other has a polished pontil mark. My large blue one also has a polished pontil mark

I wasn't mentioning names, or excesses.  :P

Two does make for a balanced display.  8)

Which I am not.
I still hate having to go to a link to see an image - I can't see the text at the same time to answer anything.
I end up getting in a right muddle because I have short-term memory problems and can't remember the question if it isn't there in front of me at the same time as the image.

So, I don't reply if it's a link I have to go to. Too much frustration and difficulty for me.

That's okay though it's set out better than most and easy to see.
Does the direct link work now Christine?
Will add some permanent photos tomorrow these were just quick ones from my phone and are huge.
