Topic: Ruby flared vase with decorative ribbed handles

H. 5½" 14cm, max width 7" 17.5cm, weight 13oz 367g.   Body lightly 12-ribbed, handles 18-ribbed.   The foot seems to be a much greyer glass than the handles.   Loads of good honest age-related wear.   The pontil scar has been roughly filed to remove any sharpness.

Any thoughts on date, maker, or anything else?   Have you seen similar decorative handles elsewhere?

I am not sure whether this will help or hinder! ...

I have a rather nicely engraved clear glass water jug with handles and feet formed from an 18-rib mould.

But the ribbing is alternately "large and small". The jug has a registration lozenge for 12 Jan 1870 for Hodgetts, Richardson & Pargeter. The design can be seen in Gulliver, page 261 as reg No. 238052.

Kevin — Thanks, I had considered the various ribbed add-ons detailed in Gulliver, but the quality of finish on my little piece was not up to the standard you would expect from these big names.

I'm going to describe it as "Greater Stourbridge", i.e. plus Birmingham, Dudley, and a few other places, and I think that's about as far as I will get.   Datewise, probably no better than late Victorian / early C20.

There were two pieces one almost identical about 10 inches in height at Cols car boot Saturday 3rd, 3 miles or so outside Stourbridge, same handles  on the one (at the time i thought they looked like swans very delicate) and on the second no handles similar shape. the seller wanted 30 quid each for them, in hindsight if i new this post was going to come on here i would have picked them up, but i could not see a profit in them

Chris — thanks for your thoughts.   I'm always very wary of ending up with unattributable "cranberry", as I find it difficult to sell.   Looking at my packing shelves for the National tomorrow, almost all of my ruby is properly attributable, mainly to Stuart, Webb, and S&W, this vase being the only exception.

You have some lovely bits on the gallery site, you might be able to help with a bit of cranberry i picked up myself recently which i'm keeping, i struggle to part with older glass, i'll post it see if you have any thoughts on it.
