Five Paperweights found French Brocante ID help please :-)
« on: June 03, 2014, 09:12:10 AM »
Hi there,

I live in France and I am trying to get help with both ID and of course value on the Paperweights above.I have been lucky in the past and have had 2 Baccarat,s and 3 small Cichy.
My husband and I are placing bets here lol but I have a feeing that the close packed millefiori is probably Murano ,and the crusafix I think could be Baccarat athough at  the bottom right hand side of the cross there appears to be a letter  L or so my husband thinks,
I feel this is just a messed up cane by air which is in quite a few places in this weight anyway
I will leave this up to someone who knows better would appreciate your hep and thoughts many thanks in advance Sonia.

Hello Sonja,

a very interesting little crowd indeed! I can clearly see one elder Murano weight,
there are Bohemian-Silesian weights (with bubbles and the Spider), and the one with
the cross is very uncommon; I would not see a Baccarat, but rather a Bohemia Connection;-)

Kind regards, Erhard
EJM

Thanks for the help Erhard

I showed these to somebody else who seems to be in the know and he has come up with the same.
There seems to be a rather large interest in the Cross, it is very  uncommon that much I know

His thoughts were

The closepack is indeed Murano, from the early-mid 20th century.  The three with bubbles are typical of paperweights from Alsace / Belgium / Czechoslovakia and elsewhere in central Europe, made anywhere from late Victorian times to the present day.  The poorer the glass (darker, with bubbles or dirt) and the less well finished the base, the earlier they are likely to be.

The one with the cross is the most interesting.  I recognise some of the canes as matching those in paperweights made in the early 1840s by Friedrich Egermann in Bohemia.

...I was wondering who else...;-)! There are not many aficinados knowing them so well,

It would be good to see which kind of cane the arms of the cross have seen from the side,

Kind regards, Erhard

Hi all,
yesterday I saw the cross paperweight for sale on e-ba-y, but mysteriously it does not show up anymore- not even in sold items,  much to my regret because I would have liked to see the results...I think I can congratulate the seller and the buyer!
by the way- it was only on e-ba-y.com, did not show on e-ba-y.at, which is hidden area restriction and (along with some other features as "best match", double listings, and text search options) a bit strange, mildly said- I get different results depending if I'm searching .co.uk, ..fr, ..de, ...com or ..at- Advantage or not? "Tell us what you think"- surely I won't to be polite....

Kind regards Erhard
p.s. anybody who knows for how much it went- please type in ROMAN NUMERALS ;-))
