This has me stumped... I cannot figure out if it's a vase or a pot of some kind. There is no evidence of a lid having been used with the pot (no wear or scratching) but there is a lip as if there should be a lid.

It's extremely heavy - 1264g / approx 2lb 12 oz (GB), stands 145mm (5.7inches) tall , and 120mm (4.72inches) in diameter across the top.

Each of the 6 panels has a star/daisy pattern surrounded by more cutting (see closeup), each panel is separated by step-cut ribbing, the base has a star cut (16 points), with a lot of wear and scratching on the flat part of the base. Around the top rim is a pattern which is two narrow cuts then a wider rounded cut, then the two narrow cuts again (there's probably a name to describe this pattern but I do not know what it may be).

It appears to have been formed in a mould as there are two feint seams just visible on the inset part between the collar and the panels.

Does anyone recognise this please? Is it a vase, or a pot, or something else entirely? Maker and age would be brilliant if anyone knows. Thanks in hope.

Hi Glen,
I'm quite familiar with this shape of pot being used for jam or marmalade, normally with a lid that has a cut-out for a spoon and a knob on the top for lifting it. If there is no evidence of one having been there from wear, it is still a possibility that it got broken early on in it's existence.

However, this is rather big!
No idea of maker, sorry.

I wonder if it might have been a cookie jar / biscuit barrel? And, like Sue, I wonder if it might well have had a lid.

Sue and Glen thank you both - it does look like it should have a lid doesn't it? There is absolutely no trace of wear that you'd expect to see from a lid though so perhaps it did get broken early on as you say Sue. It's much too big for a preserve pot really but crackers/biscuits is a possibility if it did have a lid.

Pamela thank you for the suggestion - my dearly beloved man suggested it was too big for a hyacinth so perhaps amaryllis would be a better idea. :lol:

Any thoughts as to age or maker please?

no idea I'm afraid, but I'd like to stick to large hya ie amaryllis vase
