Crystal Tumbler Set - Unique Mottled 'Opal Boulder' like
« on: June 21, 2014, 10:59:55 PM »
I found this set of 8 tumblers at a Charlotte Harbor estate sale.  They are just under 6" tall.  Ring beautifully.  They are clear and amber with a fantastic organic coloring that resembles Opal Boulder to me.  I dont see any bubbles in the glass.  I havent been able to find anything similiar.  I have tried to find a mark and one glass has what could be a signature.  I would very much appreciate any feedback/information about origin on them.

Additional pics can be found on pinterest.  http://www.pinterest.com/pin/326651779196169177/

Thank you very much!
Steph

Hortensja, from Poland. Not desperately common. Have a search here for the name, and have a read around about the history. I think there is a very long thread discussing this.
There is an older (original) version and a slightly newer one made by Hortensja - but even then it was made to order, I think.

I found the long thread discussion. You should find it very interesting!

Thank you Sue!

That is definitely the same finishing technique.  I so appreciate you pointing me to the thread and all the realted links within.  I mostly deal in pottery and bought these because they "spoke" to me.  I had no idea how i would be able to identify, but would have happily lived with them if i never identified.  I am assuming my set would be later, as the tops are not ground as your glasses are.. is that a safe assumption or not?   Glass can be so overwhelming but when i occasionally find a piece, I always enjoy the thrill and education of the research process.

Any idea what would be a fair and reasonable asking price would be for my set?

Have a great week Sue!
Steph

I assumed your set was later on the grounds of their appearance, and because I once had a "vase" - exactly the same as one of your tumblers. I can't remember anything about ground or heat-finished rims!
(I haven't re-read the big thread)

If you have a search on ebay in finished listings, you might get some idea of the prices they go for, or see if there are any listed and see what they go for. Values are very subjective, we don't really tend to discuss them here. Something is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it in that place, at that time.

Somewhere in my long thread Ivo stated that this silver oxide reduction technique could be applied (by order) to any blank, so I guess the rim finish doesn't say anything regarding the age.
Beautiful decor, anyway :)

No reference to the ground versus heat finished, that was merely my assumption, albeit bad one as Michael is correct, any glass maker could have the finished applied.  I operate way too much on hunches.  I did reach out to Alfred and he also believes that this set is the later version.

Thank you both very much for the education and information.
